Is the Mastodon check live?
Yes. When you press check we ask Mastodon right then: we look at mastodon.social only, because every Mastodon server keeps its own separate list of names. Nothing is cached and nothing is guessed. If Mastodon blocks us, rate-limits us or times out, the row says couldn't check rather than inventing an answer, because a blocked lookup and an unused name look identical from the outside.
Does no public profile mean the Mastodon username is definitely free?
No, and that is why this tool never prints the word available. A name with no profile on it can still be reserved by Mastodon, held back for a trademark owner, blocked by a banned-words list, attached to a suspended or deactivated account, or outside the length and character rules. It can also be registered by somebody else a minute after you look. Treat it as a strong hint worth pursuing, then confirm on the Mastodon signup form before you commit.
What are the Mastodon username rules?
A Mastodon username is at most 30 characters, letters, numbers and underscores only. Names that break those rules are refused at signup no matter how free they look, which is why a shortlist is worth filtering against them before you check anything.
