Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two links?
The first one addresses you: t.me followed by a public username opens your account, group or channel for whoever taps it. The second is a share intent, which opens Telegram with a link and a comment already drafted so the person can forward it to a chat of their choosing. The first is the one to print on a flyer; the second belongs on a web page as a share button.
Can I prefill a message to a person the way wa.me does?
Not for an ordinary account. A plain t.me username link opens the chat with an empty box, and Telegram only supports prefilled text through the share intent or through a bot's start parameter. If you specifically want a tap that produces a drafted message, use the share link, or point people at a bot you control.
Why does my username get rejected?
Telegram public usernames are 5 to 32 characters of letters, digits and underscores, so anything with a dot, a dash or a space is not a username. Private groups are a different thing entirely: they use invite links of the form t.me followed by a plus sign and a random code, which are issued by Telegram and cannot be constructed here.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The link and the QR code are built in your browser, there is no network request, and nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged. No account and no bot token are needed.
