Frequently asked questions
Why does my link say the phone number is invalid?
Almost always because of the format rather than the number. wa.me takes the full international number in digits only: no plus sign, no 00 international prefix, and no national trunk zero after the country code. A UK number written 07700 900123 becomes 447700900123, not 4407700900123. This tool refuses each of those three cases by name instead of stripping them silently, because 0044 and 44 are the same number while 44 plus a leading 0 is not.
Do I need a WhatsApp Business account?
No. A click-to-chat link works with any WhatsApp account, personal or business, and needs no API access and no setup on WhatsApp's side. The link simply opens a chat with that number in whichever WhatsApp app the person tapping it has installed, or in WhatsApp Web on a desktop.
Can the person edit the prefilled message?
Yes, and they have to send it themselves. The message is only a draft placed in the input box, so the recipient can change it or delete it before sending, and nothing is sent by opening the link. Keep it short: a long draft is more likely to be cleared than read.
Is the phone number I type stored anywhere?
No. The link and the QR code are built in your browser, there is no network request, and nothing you type is uploaded, stored or logged. You can also use the tool with no account at all.
