What it is
A quote post is the reply format that is not a reply. On X, Bluesky, Threads and Mastodon you can attach your own text to someone else's post and publish it as a new post, which then lives in your own timeline with its own likes and replies. It sits between a repost, which forwards without comment, and a reply, which stays buried in the original thread. The register is neutral as a mechanic, but the social meaning varies enormously: quoting to add is friendly, quoting to mock is a recognised aggressive move with its own name, quote-dunking.
How it is measured
You will see quote counts displayed separately from reposts and replies in the metrics under a post on X and Bluesky. In your own analytics they typically fold into shares or reposts rather than appearing as their own line, which means the distinction that matters socially often does not survive into the reporting.

The reliable error is quoting something to argue with it. A quote post is engagement on the original, and it hands the original to everyone who follows you, including people who would never have seen it.
