There are two real ways to keep hashtags off the visible part of your Instagram post: put them in the first comment, or separate them from the caption with line breaks so they sit below the “more” fold. Neither one hides your tags from Instagram’s ranking system, both are purely cosmetic, they just keep the caption itself clean for a person reading it.
Method 1: put them in the first comment
Post your caption without any hashtags, then immediately add a comment on your own post containing the tag set. Instagram still reads and classifies tags placed in a comment on your own post, so this works the same way for ranking purposes as putting them in the caption. The upside is a caption that reads like a normal sentence, with none of the visual clutter of a tag block underneath it.
The downside: if someone comments before you do, your tag comment gets pushed down and is less likely to be the first thing people see, though this has no effect on how the tags function.
Method 2: line breaks below the caption
Write your caption, then add several line breaks (some people use a period on each line, or invisible characters) before the hashtag block. Instagram truncates captions after three lines with a “more” link, so tags pushed past that point are hidden until someone taps to expand. This keeps everything in one place, no separate comment to manage, but it does make your caption technically longer and a little clunkier to write.
Neither one hides tags from the algorithm
This is the part people get wrong. Whether your tags are in the caption, in a comment, or buried under six line breaks, Instagram reads them the same way for classification. “Hiding” hashtags is about the reading experience for a human, not about opting in or out of how the system uses them. If you’re trying to avoid your post being classified under certain tags, the actual fix is not using those tags at all, not hiding them from view.
What to do instead
Given that hiding doesn’t change how tags function, pick based on what makes the post nicer to read. A first comment usually reads cleaner and is easier to edit later without touching the caption. Line breaks keep everything self-contained but add clutter to the caption’s raw text.
