How to Tag People in Scheduled Social Media Posts

@mention accounts on X, Bluesky, Mastodon and LinkedIn while you write a scheduled post, without leaving the composer to look up handles.

Tagging someone in a post is one of the easiest ways to get it seen: the person you mention gets notified, and their audience often sees it too. It’s also easy to get wrong. A handle with one letter off tags a stranger, or nobody at all.

BulkPublish lets you search for the account while you write, so the handle that goes into a scheduled post is the real one.

Which networks support it

NetworkWhat you can mentionWhat you type
XAny accountA name or handle
BlueskyAny accountA name or handle
MastodonAccounts on your server and on other serversA name, or a full username@server address
LinkedInCompany PagesThe Page’s URL slug

Other networks don’t let apps search for accounts, so there’s no picker for them. You can still type an @handle by hand.

How to mention someone

  1. Open the composer and select the channels you’re posting to.
  2. In the caption, type @ followed by at least two letters of the name.
  3. Pick the right account from the suggestions. Use the arrow keys and press Enter or Tab, or click it.
  4. The handle goes into your caption with a space after it, so you can keep typing.

Each suggestion shows the account’s name, handle and picture, so you can tell two similarly named accounts apart before you choose.

Press Escape to close the suggestions and keep what you typed.

Network by network

X. Search finds any public account. It uses your plan’s monthly X allowance, so it’s available on the Pro and Business plans.

Bluesky. Search finds any account by name or handle, and the handle is inserted in full, like @name.bsky.social.

Mastodon. Search runs on your own server. Someone on the same server is inserted as @username; someone on another server is inserted as @username@server, which is the form that makes the mention reach them. If an account doesn’t come up, type its full address, for example alex@fosstodon.org, to look it up directly.

LinkedIn. You can mention Company Pages, not people. Type the part of the Page’s address after linkedin.com/company/, or paste the whole address. Each result shows that address, so you can confirm it’s the right Page. If you’re posting from a personal profile, connect at least one LinkedIn Page in your workspace to search from.

Posting to several networks at once

A handle only means something on the network it belongs to. An X handle in a post that also goes to LinkedIn and Bluesky is plain text on those two.

Two ways to handle it:

  • Write a caption per network. Open that network’s own caption in the composer and mention people there. The picker then searches only that network.
  • Leave LinkedIn to us. A LinkedIn mention appears as a plain @Page Name on every other network in the same post, so it reads naturally everywhere.

If nothing shows up

  • “Reconnect this channel”: the channel’s connection has expired. Reconnect it from the Channels page and search again.
  • No suggestions on LinkedIn: the slug has to match exactly. Copy it from the Page’s address bar.
  • No suggestions on X on the Free plan: X search needs a Pro or Business plan.

Make mentions count

  • Mention people the post is actually about. Tagging accounts just for reach gets ignored, or muted.
  • Check the preview. The preview beside the composer shows how the mention will read on each network.
  • Schedule with the person in mind. A mention notifies them when the post goes out, so time it for when they’re likely to see it.
