YouTube Thumbnail Size (2026)

YouTube Thumbnail Size (2026)

The correct YouTube thumbnail dimension, plus channel banner and Shorts sizes, in one reference.

A YouTube thumbnail gets shown at a tiny size, in search results, in the sidebar, on a phone screen, long before anyone sees it full size on the video page itself. Getting the dimension right is only step one, the real test is whether it still reads clearly when it’s the size of a postage stamp.

Here are the dimensions YouTube uses.

Which size to actually use

1280 x 720 is the size for a video thumbnail, and there’s no real alternative for a standard upload, it’s the resolution YouTube expects and displays cleanly across every placement. What matters more than the number is legibility at small size: any text needs to be large and high-contrast enough to read when the thumbnail is shrunk down to sidebar size, not just when you’re looking at it full screen in an editor.

Shorts use the same 1080 x 1920 vertical frame as Instagram Reels and TikTok. Keep key visuals and text away from the top and bottom of the frame, that’s where YouTube’s own UI, like the like button and caption, sits on top of the video.

Channel banners at 2560 x 1440 get cropped differently across TV, desktop, and mobile. Keep your logo or channel name centered in the middle of the frame rather than near any edge, that’s the part that’s guaranteed to show on every device.

Format and common mistakes

Export thumbnails as JPEG or PNG at exactly 1280 x 720 rather than pulling a random frame from the video and uploading it uncropped, a purpose-built thumbnail with clear focal points performs better than a raw frame. A social media image resizer is a fast way to get a source image to the right dimension.

The most common mistake is cramming too much small text onto a thumbnail that was only checked at full size. Preview it small before publishing, if the text is hard to read shrunk down, it won’t work in a real feed either. For channel banners and other cross-platform assets, the social media image size guide keeps every dimension in one place.

Thumbnails with layered text and graphics can also end up as unnecessarily large files. Run them through an image compressor before upload, it won’t change how the thumbnail looks but it will speed up your workflow if you’re managing a lot of uploads.
