Instagram Stories fill the whole screen, so there’s really only one size that matters here. The trouble isn’t picking the right dimension, it’s that the interface sits on top of your image, and anything you place near the edges gets covered by the username, the reply box, or the progress bar.

Which size to actually use
1080 x 1920 is the size, full stop. It’s a vertical, full-bleed frame, so unlike a feed post there’s no square-versus-portrait decision to make. What matters instead is where inside that frame you put things.
Keep important content, especially text and faces, out of roughly the top and bottom edges of the image. That’s where Instagram’s own interface sits: your profile name and close button up top, the reply field and sticker tray down below. If your text lands there, it’s either half-covered or awkwardly close to it. Design with a comfortable margin on all four sides and you’ll avoid this entirely.
If you’re repurposing a Story into a feed post later, or vice versa, don’t just crop from the center and hope. Recompose it deliberately, a tight vertical crop and a square crop draw attention to different parts of the same image.
Format and common mistakes
