How the Threads Algorithm Works (2026)

How the Threads Algorithm Works (2026)

Threads has the thinnest official documentation of any major feed. Here is the little Meta confirms, what is only reported, and what moves reach.

Nobody outside Meta knows how Threads ranks posts, and Threads is the platform where that matters most, because it has published almost nothing. There is no Threads equivalent of Instagram’s ranking explainer or TikTok’s Newsroom page. Most of what circulates as “the Threads algorithm” is inference from Instagram plus creator observation.

This page is mostly about telling you which is which.

What Meta says it optimises for

Threads has two feeds: For You, which is algorithmically ranked and includes accounts you do not follow, and Following, which is chronological and limited to accounts you do follow. That much is product behaviour you can verify in the app.

Beyond that, Meta’s public statements about Threads ranking are general. The pipeline is described the way Meta describes ranking everywhere: gather eligible inventory, read signals, predict what a person is likely to do, sort by score. Threads was built on Instagram’s account graph, and Instagram engagement is used to seed recommendations for new users.

Adam Mosseri has said repeatedly, in posts on Threads itself, that replying is roughly as valuable as posting for growth on the platform. That is a first-party statement from the person running it, but it is commentary in a social post, not documentation.

Note: Statements here were checked against Meta’s Transparency Center ranking documentation and Adam Mosseri’s public posts as of September 2026. Threads publishes no dedicated ranking explainer. Platforms change these without notice.

What signals does Threads rank on?

This table is honest about provenance, which is the only responsible way to write it.

Any guide that gives you a numbered weighting for Threads is inventing it. There is nothing to cite.

What changed most recently

Confirmed: Threads gained a chronological Following feed, in-app topic feeds, and fediverse sharing. Each of these changes distribution mechanically, by changing what feeds exist, without any ranking change at all.

Widely reported, not confirmed: that Threads has reduced the share of unconnected recommendations in For You for established accounts. Creators report it. Meta has not published anything.

Practitioner heuristic: post more, reply more, keep threads (the multi-post kind) short. Reasonable. Unsourced.

Myths this kills

Shadowbans. Threads inherits Meta’s published demotion categories and its recommendations guidelines, so reduced distribution is a real, documented thing. A secret per-account ban is not documented anywhere. Threads reach is also genuinely volatile in a way Instagram’s is not, because the For You feed leans on unconnected recommendations, so a quiet week is weak evidence of anything. See what a shadowban actually is.

Engagement pods. Unfounded. Threads is the platform where they look most tempting, because early replies visibly matter, and it is also the platform where the audience mismatch does the most damage: replies from people with no topical overlap teach the system nothing about who to show your post to.

“The algorithm hates links.” The most confidently repeated Threads claim, and the least supported. No Meta statement demotes links on Threads. The observable effect, when it exists, is the same as everywhere: a post that ships people elsewhere gets less on-platform engagement.

Posting time is decisive. Threads For You skews recent, so timing matters somewhat more here than on TikTok or YouTube. It still is not the difference between 200 views and 20,000. Our best time to post on Threads guide and the Threads posting time tool give you starting windows, and how often to post on Threads covers cadence.

What actually moves distribution, in priority order

  1. Replies, both received and given. The one thing the head of Instagram keeps saying out loud.
  2. A post that invites a response. Not bait. A genuine opinion or an open question.
  3. Volume. Threads posts are cheap to make and individually low-stakes, which is unusual and worth exploiting.
  4. Recency. Real, because For You skews new and Following is chronological.
  5. Topical consistency. So the system can place you.
  6. Your Instagram audience. It seeds your Threads distribution whether you like it or not.

What to do

Treat Threads as a conversation surface, not a broadcast one. Reply to other people daily. Post short and often. Say something with an edge on it, because a post nobody disagrees with gets no replies.

Scheduling Threads alongside everything else

Threads rewards volume, and volume is a queue problem. BulkPublish schedules Threads posts alongside 14 other platforms, with per-platform text so a Threads post is not a truncated Instagram caption. There is a walkthrough on how to schedule Threads posts.

The parts you control

Format, hook, consistency. On a platform with almost no published documentation, that framing is not a fallback, it is the only honest advice available. Anyone giving you a precise Threads ranking formula is guessing, and you should assume so.
