How it is measured
Take the follower count at the end of a period, subtract the follower count at the start, and the result is net growth. This single subtraction is what most dashboards display, folding gains and losses into one number.
Commonly misunderstood
Because the headline figure is net, it hides everything happening underneath it. An account that gains 100 new followers and loses 90 in the same week shows up identically to an account that gains 10 and loses none, both post net growth of plus 10. But these are completely different situations. The first account has a churn problem: something about its content or first impression is attracting follows that do not stick. The second account has no churn at all. Reading only the net number, both look equally healthy, when one clearly needs attention that the other does not.
