Across the two large 2026 benchmark studies we could check directly, median organic engagement rates land roughly here: TikTok between 2.01% and 3.70%, Instagram between 0.30% and 0.48%, Facebook around 0.15%, and X between 0.03% and 0.12%. The spread is not measurement noise. The two studies count different things.
That is the useful part of this page. A single confident number for “the average engagement rate on Instagram” is almost always someone quoting one study without its denominator.

Rival IQ (now part of Quid) states its method plainly: “Engagement rate is calculated by dividing total interactions by follower count,” across a sample of 150 companies drawn at random from each industry in a database of more than 200,000 companies.
Socialinsider’s 2026 benchmarks analysed 70 million posts published between January 2024 and December 2025, using a per-platform formula: likes plus comments divided by followers on Instagram, reactions plus comments plus shares divided by fans on Facebook, likes plus retweets divided by followers on X, and likes plus comments plus shares plus saves divided by followers on TikTok.
Both are dividing by followers. They still differ by a factor of nearly two on TikTok, because the sample is different: brand pages in a benchmarking tool’s database are not the same population as 200,000-plus accounts across every industry, and the date windows do not line up.

The four formulas people call “engagement rate”
This is where most published benchmarks quietly diverge. Take a post with 400 likes, 60 comments and 40 shares (500 interactions) on an account with 20,000 followers, that reached 8,000 accounts and served 12,000 impressions.

Same post. Four answers, spanning almost four times. None of them is wrong; they answer different questions. By followers asks “how much of my audience acted”. By reach asks “how many people who actually saw it acted”. By impressions penalises repeat views. By views is the standard for short video, where follower count barely predicts distribution.
So before comparing your number to any benchmark, check that the benchmark uses your denominator. Socialinsider’s LinkedIn benchmark, for example, divides engagement by impressions, and its TikTok benchmark divides by views, which is why those two numbers look enormous next to Instagram’s follower-based 0.48%. Why per-follower rates fall as accounts grow
Both studies show the same shape: smaller accounts post higher per-follower engagement. Socialinsider’s TikTok data for 2025 puts accounts with 1,000 to 5,000 followers at 4.40%, while accounts with 50,000 to 100,000 followers sit at 3.75%.
The mechanism is arithmetic, not quality. Follower counts accumulate; they include people who followed you three years ago and have not opened the app since. Reach does not accumulate. So the denominator grows faster than the numerator, and the ratio falls even when a post performs well. This is also why a 1,000-follower account comparing itself to an industry median is doing something close to meaningless.

Benchmarks are a comparison, not a target
A benchmark tells you where a large sample of other accounts landed under one methodology in one time window. It cannot tell you what your account should hit, because it does not know your niche, your audience’s country, your posting cadence, or whether your followers were bought.
Two rules that hold up:
- Compare yourself to yourself first. Your engagement rate this quarter against your engagement rate last quarter is a real signal. Your rate against a global median is trivia.
- Ignore benchmarks below roughly 5,000 followers. At small follower counts a single post that lands can move your monthly rate by whole percentage points. The variance swamps the signal.
Rival IQ’s own data makes the case for narrowing the comparison: it reports higher education at 7.36% on TikTok versus 2.10% on Instagram, and nonprofits at 3.04% versus 0.56%. If industry moves the number by that much, the all-industry median is not your benchmark.
What to do with this
- Decide on one formula and write it down. Most teams should use engagement by reach for feed posts and engagement by views for short video.
- Recalculate the last 12 months with that formula so you have a baseline.
- Track the trend monthly. Flag anything outside your own normal range, and look at what changed in format or timing rather than at the industry median.
- If you must benchmark externally, pick the study whose denominator matches yours and quote it by name and date.
For picking format, both studies agree that format moves engagement more than timing does, which is worth reading alongside how often to post and when.
