Social Media Statistics (2026)

Social Media Statistics (2026)

Sourced social media statistics for 2026: user numbers from company filings, adoption data from Pew and DataReportal, and engagement medians with formulas.

DataReportal’s mid-year 2026 update puts global social media user identities at 5.79 billion, or 69.9% of the world population, growing 5.4% year on year. Meta reported 3.60 billion daily active people across its apps in June 2026. Those are the two largest reliable numbers in this space, and both are worth understanding before the rest.

Everything below is attributed to a named, dated source. Where no company publishes a figure, this page says so rather than repeating an estimate.

DataReportal is careful about the phrase “user identities”, and so should you be. These are accounts, not people. One person with an Instagram account, a TikTok account and two X accounts is four identities. Nobody publishes a de-duplicated global count of humans using social media, and anyone who does is estimating.

These come from earnings releases and earnings calls, which is the highest-quality source available for any of them.

LinkedIn’s number is members, meaning accounts ever registered. It is not an activity metric and should never be compared to Meta’s daily active people.

The numbers nobody publishes

This is the section most statistics roundups skip.

  • TikTok global users. TikTok last disclosed a global figure in September 2021: 1 billion monthly active users. It has published nothing official since. Every 2026 figure you see, whether 1.9 billion or 2.2 billion, is a third-party estimate or an advertising-reach model.
  • YouTube monthly active users. Google does not publish one. The commonly quoted 2.5 billion comes from advertising-reach modelling, not a company disclosure.
  • X users. The last figure published while the company was public was 229.0 million monetizable daily active users, reported in Twitter’s Form 10-Q for Q1 2022. X has published no audited figure since going private.

Advertising reach is the usual substitute, and DataReportal’s April 2026 update reports potential ad reach at 2.65 billion for YouTube, 2.39 billion for Facebook, 2.21 billion for TikTok, 1.99 billion for Instagram and 1.43 billion for LinkedIn. Ad reach is what the platform’s own ad tools claim they can serve, which is a business estimate and typically exceeds any real user count.

United States adoption

Pew Research Center surveyed 5,022 US adults between 5 February and 18 June 2025, publishing on 20 November 2025.

PlatformShare of US adults who ever use it
YouTube84%
Facebook71%
Instagram50%

Pew also reports 52% of US adults going on Facebook daily and 48% on YouTube daily, and a gender gap on Instagram: 55% of women against 44% of men.

Engagement medians

Two 2026 benchmark studies, two different samples, both dividing interactions by followers:

TikTok2.01%3.70%
Instagram0.30%0.48%
Facebooknot stated0.15%
X0.03%0.12%
YouTube0.21%not covered

Socialinsider’s LinkedIn benchmark reports 5.20%, but against impressions rather than followers, so it is not comparable to the column above. That distinction is explained with worked arithmetic in social media engagement rate benchmarks, and the engagement rate calculator will convert your own numbers between formulas.

The short version

  • 5.79 billion social media identities, about 70% of the planet, still growing at 5.4% a year.
  • Meta reaches 3.6 billion people a day across its apps, the largest verified audience number in the industry.
  • TikTok, YouTube and X do not publish user counts. Treat every figure you read for them as an estimate.
  • Engagement medians are low and falling on Instagram, and depend entirely on the formula. Do not compare a views-based rate to a follower-based one.

Publishing across all of this

Reach is spread across more platforms every year, which is the practical reason cross-posting tools exist. BulkPublish publishes to 15 platforms from one queue: Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, Bluesky, Threads, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, Mastodon, Discord, Telegram, Tumblr and Snapchat. The analytics view then pulls the per-post numbers back so the statistics you act on are your own rather than an industry median.
